The quote that is often ascribed to H.J. Anslinger, below, contains racist language and ideas. It appears below the page break.

Some bibliographies have cited the "Marijuana Users - Musicians, 1933-1937 " folder within the Harry J. Anslinger papers as the source of a document with the following quote: "There are 100,000 total marijuana smokers in the U.S., and most are Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos and entertainers. Their Satanic music, jazz and swing result from marijuana use. This marijuana causes white women to seek sexual relations with Negroes, entertainers and any others."

Special Collections has been unable to verify this quote. No documents within that cited folder contain the alleged quote. Other writings cite the source as part of Anslinger's testimony from a 1937 Congressional testimony for the Marihuana Tax Act (H.R. 6906). The answer as to whether or not Anslinger wrote or said those words is currently unclear due to conflicting and incorrect citations throughout multiple publications.
